Lyndon Baines Johnson, also known as LBJ, was born on August 27, 1908 at Stonewall, Texas. He was the first child of Sam Ealy Johnson, Jr., and Rebekah Baines Johnson, and had three sisters and a brother: Rebekah, Josefa, Sam Houston, and Lucia. Created in 1893 by the Texas Legislature, the Southwest Texas Normal School in San Marcos opened in 1903 to educate and certify teachers for the public schools of Texas. Promoted to a full-fledged senior college, the Southwest Texas Normal College, in 1918, the school again changed its name five years later to the Southwest Texas State Teachers College.
